When Gaylene and Brian heard the sad story of Smoke and his sister, their hearts were touched and they wanted to help. Provided their elderly resident dog, Ruby, would accept them, all three dogs could live out their retirement years on 25 lovely acres in Muriwai.
After a four week trial period it was clear that Smoke would fit in beautifully. However Ruby and Patches didn't bond, so after a lot of soul-searching we decided to separate them. We just couldn't deny Smoke a fabulous home with kind people who would love and care for him for his remaining years.
Smoke is delighted with his new life - with long walks on the property, swimming in the ponds and having plenty of human and dog company.
It was a thrill to receive these words from Gaylene, “We would love to adopt Smoke, he has settled in really well and he’s a lovely boy”.
And in other correspondence, “Smoke is going like a train, very happy and relaxed and Ruby and he are getting very friendly and playful. Yippee!
He enjoyed walks with other dogs when a friend’s pack came over this morning. Smoke and Moses, the young male, were tearing around madly with all six canines having a great time. Smoke is very friendly and demonstrative, quite a character and very talkative…”

ORIGINAL ADVERT: URGENT - PATCHES & SMOKE ARE BEREAVED
My heart ached when I learned of the 11-year-old sibling dogs whose beloved caregiver had passed away. Patches, and her brother Smoke, are Staffy x Blue Heelers who, for months, have continued to live alone, laying on their blanket in the corner of an empty room, in the unfurnished house that was once their happy home.
Part of the e-mail I received said, “We are writing to you because [other rescue agencies] can't help us. Smoke and Patches are friendly, affectionate dogs in need of a loving home. My brother died suddenly, and they desperately need a fenced, cat-free home with a kind-hearted dog lover. Many thanks for reading our letter. Do you think you could help us re-home them?”
Tragically these pets were taught to treat cats as prey, so other family members cannot take these mature dogs into the warmth and comfort of their feline-filled homes. However, they visit them daily with food, take them for walks 4-5 times a week and are very concerned about their future. This situation is far from ideal for such intelligent and loving dogs and, of course, the house needs to be sold.
Patches and Smoke love to play and snuggle up together - so if possible, we would like to keep them together for their remaining retirement years.
In the words of a family member, “They love one another, so preferably need a home together. Somewhere with a fence, and no cats and probably no farm animals. We would like people who would walk them most days, and give them lots of cuddles, be near them, let them spend time inside. They seek cuddles, love pats and strokes and will hang out with people all day if given the chance…”
Patches and Smoke are both de-sexed, registered, and fully vaccinated. They are up-to-date with their flea and worm treatments. They have just had a comprehensive vet check, been micro-chipped and had their bloods tested. Other than a little arthritis creeping in, they are both in wonderful condition for their age.
If you have no cats living with you or visiting your property and if you are in a position to offer plenty of affection and walks to Patches and Smoke, I very much look forward to hearing from you. Applicants will need to have securely fenced and gated properties.
