URGENT
EMMA FACES A LETHAL INJECTION

Five-year-old purebred Border Collie, Emma, is facing a lethal injection unless a suitable home can urgently be found for her. She needs a fully fenced, adult home where she is the only pet and where she gets plenty of love and attention. Emma is a very affectionate girl with people, but she will not share the attention of her caregivers with other animals. Please forward this newsflash to others who may be able to help. Hopefully some wonderful applications will come forward to ensure Emma has a very safe and happy New Year.

PACK RAT STEW & OTHER TALES by NZ author Don Batley

pack-rat-stew-front-cover The 32 pages of quirky, rhyming animal stories in this A4 sized paperback book will appeal to all age groups, including young-at-heart adults.

The beautiful coloured illustrations of Chris Schipper will delight even the youngest of children.

Pack Rat Stew will be a wonderful gift for the kids in your life or for libraries, schools and kindergartens. Please spread the word.

This special book was written and donated by Kiwi author Don Batley (pictured). He dedicated it to his much-loved friend Bandit the cat. Don has been actively supporting our work with animals in strife since early 2006 when he adopted five piglets from us who are happily living out their natural lifespans on his property. Thank you Don – we appreciate you so much!

Don is unlikely to produce a re-run of his book, so this is your last chance to get copies. Pack Rat Stew is available at this price only while our stock lasts. They will make great Christmas stocking fillers. Please order today!

author-don-batley.jpg We are hoping our supporters will buy the books in groups of 5 or more to quickly raise the urgently needed funds and to save us postage & packaging costs. However, we welcome orders for smaller numbers too.

NOTE: Special thanks to Karen Wheeler at S.G. Digital Ltd in Auckland for donating enough Animal Re-homing business cards for inclusion with each book.

JILL & BEN – THE FLOWERPOT FRIENDS by NZ artist George Doel

jill--ben-garden-people These eye-catching, 900mm tall, wooden garden people are original hand-crafted pieces. They weigh about 13.5kg each and are made from H4 ground retention tanalised timber. The joints are glued, screwed and/or galvanised nailed. The terracotta pots are replaceable and Jill & Ben’s birthdates are under their hats. Their heads will turn in any direction and they can easily be moved about by lifting them under their armpits.

Although they are built to last and can be left outdoors all year round, George recommends putting them in a sheltered spot during the winter to extend their lifespan.

Jill likes people and constantly waves to garden visitors while her colourful, ribboned plaits blow in the breeze. With her golden eyes, matching nose and fashionable scarf, she will add colour and interest to any garden.

Ben is a bit of a rebel with his flowing hair, droopy moustache and a ‘mum’ tattoo on his arm. With his John Denver specs, green eyes & nose and a scarf to match Jill’s, he cannot help but attract the interest of passers-by. Being an old soldier, Ben wears a note reminding people that “Old soldiers never die. They just go to heaven and re-group”.

aartist-george-doel Jill and Ben were created and donated by Glenfield artist George Doel - specifically as a fundraising initiative for Animal Re-homing. This is not the first time we have benefited from his generosity and talent. Earlier this year George (pictured) gifted us beautiful dog sculptures to help raise funds. We are very grateful for his on-going support.

In the spirit of fundraising we are hoping that Jill & Ben will sell for an outrageous price.

NOTE: Special thanks to Ross Healy at Timber World in Albany for providing the necessary wood to create these cute garden folk at a very good price.

Thank you so much to each of you for participating in our 2012 fundraising campaign. Your help is life-saving and enables us to continue our work.

HAPPY WORLD VEGAN DAY!

November 1st is World Vegan Day and the whole month of November is World Vegan Month!

All over the world today vegans and their friends are celebrating a lifestyle choice that cherishes all animals - including the ones who other people kill and eat as food.

If you are considering this compassionate way of living, I encourage you to make a 30 day pledge to go veg. If you are not considering it, I challenge you to take the pledge. :-)

Click here to make the pledge and to obtain an informative starter kit.
Click here for the New Zealand Vegan Society website.

We created the special lunch below to mark the occasion and to celebrate the hundreds of animal lives we have saved through our choice. There is a saying that we should eat a rainbow of colours to be vibrantly healthy. Paul hasn't eaten animals for 12 years and I haven't put their flesh in my mouth for over 36 years. We thoroughly recommend this healthy, delicious and humane habit. Hope to see you at the next vegan pot luck dinner!

GUY FAWKES NIGHT ON NOVEMBER 5th 2012

scared-dogIf you are planning to have a bonfire, please do not build it until a few hours before it is going to be lit. Piles of wood, etc can attract hedgehogs, frogs and other animals looking for a place to hibernate, shelter or nest. It is best to store the material for the bonfire in a different area from where it is going to be burned. That way any animals who do crawl into the pile will be evicted rather than cremated.

Caregivers of all species of animals are urged to make preparations for fireworks night. Pet animals should be kept inside from before sunset on November 5th. Farmed animals should have access to barns, coops and deep kennels. Having the curtains shut and a radio or TV on can help to distract the animals from the noise of the fireworks.

Instead of spending money on a private fireworks party, please go to organised public displays where, for nothing or a small donation, you can watch thousands of dollars worth of very powerful and spectacular fireworks being set off safely by experts.

THE RESCUE OF PIDGEY

pidgeyfaceWhen pensioner Val saw a pigeon flying through the air with one amputated leg attached to the other by fishing line, she urgently contacted us for help.

During the next week every effort was made to save Pidgey’s other leg. For more photographs and to see what happened, please click here...
