Pumpkin and Sesame are both girls!

Every time we rescue chicks, we hope against all odds that they will be hens. 50% of the time they are not and we then have the almost impossible task of finding safe and loving homes for little cockerels - sadly, roosters are the most unwanted animal we work with.

We were dreading hearing the gurgling (but very cute) sounds of juvenile practise crows when Pumpkin laid her first egg - amidst plenty of clamour. A week later Sesame quietly followed suit and we were delighted to discover their eggs side by side in the nesting box.

These wee girls have been lovingly raised at our Auckland shelter for 5 months and have developed a deep trust in us. They must be adopted into a home where they are more than egg laying machines, more than breeders and more than garden decorations. We expect Pumpkin and Sesame to be welcomed as cherished companions and family members.

If you have a wonderful setup for these good friends that is safe from dogs, hawks and other predators and if you will spend time interacting with them, we would like to hear from you.

We would also like to hear from you if you can offer a safe haven to 1-100 roosters on your rural property.
