Charlie has a wonderful home now...

Charlie and his female companion spent their first four years chained to stakes as breeding dogs. Then Animal Management found them on the streets, with their coats entirely matted, dragging their heavy chains behind their 5kg frames. They were taken to the dog pound and separately adopted. Charlie was adored by his adoptive family, but his irritation with toddlers meant they couldn’t keep him.

We have had a delightful time with Charlie since he has been in our care. He has drawn many worthy applicants, and we have chosen a wonderful family for him. Pat, Ron and Jeff were ecstatic when we told them they were successful in their application. In their words “Charlie has been with us for two days, but you would be forgiven for thinking he has been here for two years. He is so happy and has adapted so well we can hardly believe it”.

Since then, he has been to his first group dog training class where the trainer told them he was a star and that they had adopted a winner! We already knew that…

Animal Re-homing Needs A Vehicle

Our dear old car has finally given up after more than two decades of loyal service. She has transported thousands of at-risk animals; she has bumped over rough landscapes to rescue geese, peafowl and chickens; she has taken carloads of volunteers to protests and rallies; she has made endless trips to various vet clinics & specialists around Auckland; she has delivered animals to their new homes up and down the North Island; she has carried food, bales of hay & equipment to fosterers, boarding kennels & catteries; she has taken us to meetings and public presentations with councils, community groups, individuals and the SPCA Cat Coalition; she has collected animal groceries and donations of food parcels; she has transported chickens, calves, pigs, sheep, dogs, cats, rabbits, hedgehogs, rats, mice, guinea-pigs, hundreds of ex-battery hens, peafowl, ducks, geese and many other bird species. She is worn out and we are struggling without air conditioning and other urgently needed features.

Please help us to buy a reliable station wagon to continue our animal rescue work. Huge thanks in advance to everyone who donates, posts our fundraiser on their Facebook page, requests the widget code for their website and forwards our plea to their friends, family and colleagues.

Exciting news!

Exciting news! Who wouldn't eat a burger with a healthy patty that looks like meat, tastes like meat and bleeds like meat - but hasn't caused any animals to die? Sounds like a win-win to us!

Mars NZ Volunteer Day a Huge Success

When Mars NZ offered staff members Vicki, Nina, Debs, Ursula, Paul, Darren, Gerry and Steve to volunteer, we couldn’t say yes fast enough. Every year they dedicate 40 hours in the community. This year they chose us!

Among other important tasks, they managed to clean the car, walk the rescue dogs, remove the stairwell carpet & tacks, give companionship to the shelter cats, clean the windows inside & out, repair animal beds, change the kitty litter boxes, weed the property, clear an overgrown area, prepare a winter garden, fill dog-created lawn potholes, and water-blast the paths, walls, stairs, boardwalk & outdoor furniture. What a magnificent effort!

Between them they gifted their energy, expertise, DIY attitudes, sweat, patience, muddied clothes & blistered hands and gave us over 40 hours of their precious time - which made a huge difference to our animals, shelter environment and morale.

Thank you so much Team Mars NZ, we’d be glad to have you back any time!

Bandit & Sam are inseparable

When a kind family discovered a very cute rabbit hopping around their garden, they looked after him while they advertised that they had found him. Unfortunately his care-givers didn’t come forward, so the family brought him to us. Our dedicated volunteer Sam fostered this little fellow while we continued to search for his original home. Sam fell head-over-heels in love, so when our search proved fruitless, she named him Bandit and joyfully adopted him. What a happy ending!

However, this means we’ve lost a fantastic rabbit fosterer! If you’d like to foster an animal, please email us at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

We would like to thank the Veterinary Hospital Group clinic in Hibiscus Coast for applying charity discounts when we have our bunnies vet-checked, de-sexed, vaccinated and micro-chipped.
