Vegan celebration at Hector’s Restaurant, Heritage Auckland Hotel

Trustees Paul and Linda were joined by eight of our most regular dog-walking volunteers for a night to remember - dining at Hectors Restaurant, Heritage Auckland Hotel. The haute cuisine mid-winter vegan buffet exceeded all of our expectations as we savoured dish after fabulous dish.

Award winning chef Jinu Abraham and his team outdid themselves once again! The attentive staff and the general ambience completed the fine dining experience.

Congratulations to the management of Heritage Auckland Hotel for recognising a growing trend and for routinely providing cruelty-free meals and beverages with flair.

Rodeo’s dirty dozen excuses

All the same excuses are rolled out in New Zealand. Rodeo is legal animal abuse. Stop supporting it and it will die a natural death. There's nothing 'entertaining' about watching terrified animals being brutally bullied.

Introducing smart little Niki

altSixteen-week-old Niki was taken to a vet clinic for a lethal injection, partly because she wouldn't make a good pig dog. Fortunately the vet nurse knew about Animal Re-homing and urgently contacted us for help. Thankfully, instead of paying for her to be put down, Niki's caregiver contributed towards her vet costs and agreed to sign her over. A few days later our dedicated volunteers Brown and Jardine met the kind nurse half way and brought affectionate Niki to Auckland.

Niki is a sweet and loyal little German Shepherd x Border Collie puppy who loves to be with people and other dogs. Already this intelligent girl can be walked off-leash, comes to the call, sits and lays down. Although still underweight, she is beginning to fill out nicely. She will be a beautiful dog for an active individual, couple or family.

Many thanks to Dog Protection Society New Zealand for fostering her for us and to Hayley at Designer Dog Grooming Ltd for nail-clipping, brushing and bathing Niki.

Chickens as loved pets

As this beautiful video clip demonstrates, chickens can be just as loving and interactive as other animal companions. Please don't eat them or their cruelly produced eggs.

Featuring gorgeous Brownie

Sometimes animals come into our care who, due to medical or temperament issues, stay with us as permanent residents. Today we feature one such beauty; a cat named Brownie.

A year ago we had a call from a vet clinic asking if we would rescue a friendly old cat. Her family was moving house and took her to the clinic to be killed that day - because they didn’t want to take her with them.

We agreed and requested that her lethal injection was replaced with a comprehensive vet check. Beautiful Brownie’s thyroid levels were maintained by diet alone, but she needed a dental including extractions, flea and worm treatments, a micro-chip inserted and her clogged ears cleaned. We also discovered her front claws had been removed at some stage - a very painful surgery and recovery that is now illegal. We were tempted to change her name to Autumn because her gorgeous coat shimmers in the sunshine with browns, rusts, tans and golds.

A year later, 18-year-old Brownie is a well-loved member of our shelter family. She sleeps most of the time, her thyroid can be unstable and she has renal disease… but she has a ready purr, is warm, cuddled and safe with us for the rest of her life. Brownie’s recent medical costs for treatment of a blocked digestive tract are more than $1,000 – is anyone able to sponsor part of these costs for her please?
