Huge thanks to Paw Justice

Huge thanks to Paw Justice for its recent generous donation of dog food. It was lovely to be able to share some of the bounty with our friends at Dog Protection Society New Zealand and with other dog rescue groups.

We've said before and we say it again - Paw Justice, YOU ROCK! From us and all the rescue dogs, thank you so very much guys.

We also welcome public donations of pet food and animal paraphernalia - be it for cats, dogs, rabbits, chickens, hedgehogs or any other creature in strife. If you have something to donate, please contact us at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

We are based in Browns Bay on the North Shore of Auckland.

Embarking on a large chicken rescue project

We will soon be embarking on a large chicken rescue project in the wider Auckland area and will be looking for private loving homes for four different social/family groups.

1). Hens with chicks
2). Hens
3). Roosters (Single or as free-roaming colonies)
4). Older chicks of unknown gender

If you are able to offer a safe, predator-free home to any of these groups, please contact us at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

NOTE: Interview questions and adoption criteria apply. Photos of your property will be requested and an inspection carried out. Thank you.

Lost Gracie

gracie

We are grieved to advise that we have lost Gracie, our dear little three legged rescue girl, due to a sudden aneurysm.

Twelve years ago we caught her in our humane trap and were shocked that the flesh-less bones of her front leg were running diagonally across her chest... eaten clean by time and insects.

When we took her skeletal body to the vet, euthanasia was recommended because Grace was considered too weak to survive an anaesthetic for amputation. We asked the vet to give her a chance.

Grace made a full recovery and a feisty, frightened personality emerged. Eventually she learned to trust us and responded to gentle touch. Being an "exclusive bonder", we were unable to put Grace up for adoption. She has lived her life sleeping with her favourite humans at night and exploring our home-based shelter with her lunging gait.

Grace became extremely loving as the years passed and was the most prolific head-bunter we have ever encountered. Her loud purr rings in our ears and we so miss the softness of her fur as she slept against us under the sheets. Gracie knew unconditional love, care and safety... and this brings us immense comfort.

Having an animal shelter that accepts "difficult cases" inevitably means some of the rescue animals stay with us for the length of their natural lifespans... however long or short that may be. Yes, we weep frequently, but wouldn't miss sharing the journeys of these beautiful courageous souls.

Thank you Gracie - you enriched our lives and reminded us every day that euthanasia must be a last resort. Farewell sweet girl.

Last year two of the hapless birds plummeted to their deaths while others sustained injuries. Thank you.

Pablo will be a loyal companion to his successful applicant

Would you like to offer a home to a beautiful, adventurous rescue dog?

Pablo’s early history is unknown. He was found at an isolated Auckland dog park, emaciated, bald and begging for food. Whether he was lost or abandoned, no-one came forward for Pablo when we advertised him. We took this fun-loving dog under our umbrella and had him vet checked, registered, neutered, micro-chipped, vaccinated, flea and worm treated… and have grown to dearly love him and his exuberant zest for life.

His age and breed(s) are also a mystery so our vet has estimated that he is a Labrador X aged between 3-5 years.

During his time with us Pablo has rapidly progressed in his training and learned so much from coaches, kennel staff and our dog walking volunteers. He’s learning how to enjoy human affection, to travel in a car, to walk on a leash, to sit, shake hands, to go into water and (most times) come to the call. He is still learning how to remain calm in exciting, unexpected situations and how to lay quietly at a café or when his walker stops to chat with someone. To ensure a strong and respectful bond is formed, Pablo’s successful applicant must undertake a series of group dog training sessions with him as a condition of his adoption.

Due to his days of starvation, Pablo guards his food; because of this and his spurts of boisterousness, we are seeking a calm adult home with an active individual or couple who have dog experience and a willingness to continue training him. Ideally Pablo would be the only animal in the home – although he does enjoy the company of other dogs. Pablo is an intelligent, confident dog without obvious separation, anxiety or fear issues. He needs a firm and loving caregiver to help him to understand the complexities of living with humans.

Pablo the loving, the happy, the soulful, is also Pablo the playful. He’s keen to fetch and carry balls, pinecones and sticks and to bring them back to his caregiver. He expresses his happiness by rolling in the grass and goofily mouthing those he loves. We are teaching him that mouthing hurts and is inappropriate… and he’s learning fast.

We are looking for a home for gentle Pablo where he will be with a human friend most of the time. He will be a fun, loyal and loving companion and, after his ordeal with homelessness (and whatever came before that), we very much look forward to placing him in a home where he will be cherished for the rest of his life.
