Thanks to everyone's generous donations, Vernie's fences and gates are shaping up beautifully. Friends of his future family have turned up to weekend working bees and nothing has been able to stop their determination - not even a large tree that needed to be removed... or torrential downpours.

We are halfway there, but cannot continue without further funds to purchase more building materials.

Cerberus was saved through a united public effort. He went from sleeping under a tree in an Auckland suburban neighbourhood, to being impounded in a council shelter.

Today he was released from the pound and is in a welcoming foster home until he is neutered and adopted.

Congratulations to everyone involved for a fantastic outcome!

We are so happy to be playing a part in this beautiful boy's rescue...

Remember Rusty, the skeletal cat who we finally rescued near the rubbish dump?

This incredibly affectionate boy has been with us for 18 days now and has had two vet visits. We can confirm that he is a neutered male - sadly, without a micro-chip.

It took gentle abdominal massage and three days of very wet, very small meals before his bowels began to work. Either they were completely and utterly empty or they had closed down in readiness for his death.

Considering his height and length, Rusty is severely underweight at just 2.5kg. He has needed two lots of subcutaneous fluids to help with dehydration, a B12 injection, a strong worm tablet, treatment for a sebaceous cyst and plenty of prescription food to help with suspected kidney disease. His gentle responses during vet procedures are beautiful to observe.

We've given him a soft warm sponge bath, cleaned his dirt encrusted eyes and ears; and given him as much love as we can - considering he is looking for cuddles 24/7. He especially loves to have his front paws held while he snuggles in.

When he is stronger, Rusty will have bloods and x-rays taken and have a dental treatment. Meanwhile our role is to give him the loving home-care he has so sorely needed. We hope we are not too late.

Tiny orphan chicks from different suburbs were handed in to a bird rescue centre, two weeks apart. Concerned that they might turn out to be roosters, the centre took first one, then the other to a vet clinic - to be put down.

Fortunately the vet staff settled the first chick in an incubator and cared for it until it was eating and drinking well. When the second chick arrived, it was introduced to the first and they are now robust friends.

The veterinarian tried to find a safe haven for them before contacting us for help and we are now fostering them at our home-based shelter on the North Shore of Auckland.

These friendly, cheeping bundles of cuteness are about 8-weeks-old and need a predator proof home... where it won't matter whether they are hens or roosters.
