Huge thanks to Carla

Today we acknowledge the kindness and dedication of Carla Bryan Beardshaw for regularly growing, donating & delivering cat grass to our shelter. Grass is an essential part of a cat’s diet and, because all of our rescued cats remain indoors until they are adopted, we must provide it for them. We can never have enough... so please contact us if you are also a green fingered soul.

In 2012 Carla and her son George offered to volunteer for Animal Re-homing, so we have shared many experiences. We have been the happy recipients of her delicious vegan baking; she has transported animals and their paraphernalia; dropped food scraps in our letterbox for our various rescued birds; fed at-risk geese every day until we trapped them for relocation; fostered a rehabilitating dog and hedgehogs for us at short notice; attended rallies & protests; and helped us move a previously homeless woman and her three dogs into new accommodation - a major undertaking! (See the last photo taken when the house move was complete).

Thank you so much Carla – we recognise your very special qualities and appreciate all the assistance and support you continue to give us. You are an exceptional woman!

Sick of cruel farming practices?

We are outraged by cruel farming practises in New Zealand! The inhumane colony cages for egg laying hens, that have already been banned in more progressive countries, are being phased-in in NZ. What a joke! If you don’t want to be part of the animal abuse, check out the Vegan Food Fair 2016 in Auckland this coming Sunday. Taste delicious cruelty-free food and learn why veganism is becoming such a popular lifestyle.

You can also check out the The Vegan Society of Aotearoa, New Zealand for more info about living compassionately.

Let Countdown know you won't be shopping there while they continue to sell eggs from caged hens. It's time they followed in their Australian counterpart's footsteps and banned them for good. Click here

Cruel Colony Cages on TV3 tonight

Are colony cages any more bearable for hens than the old battery cages?

You decide... NOT TO BE MISSED: TONIGHT TV3’s Story will air a brand new investigation into the ‘humane’ alternative to battery cages. Watch at 7pm and check back in here with us after.

Pet duck seeks pampering home

animal rehomingCornelius is a charming and friendly Muscovy duck who must be adopted into a home where he is treated as a beloved pet. He will need affectionate interaction with caregiver(s) and it would be a bonus if he had another Muscovy or two to hang out with – he also enjoys the company of the shelter’s rabbits and hen. He loves bathing, so his successful applicant will need to have a pond or a pool for him to splash about in. He wags his tail when he sees someone approaching him, when he is given his twice-daily meals and when he’s heading up the ramp into his cosy sleeping quarters. He is simply a happy and delightful boy!

It wasn’t always this good. Cornelius and his mate had their wings roughly clipped (so they couldn’t fly home) and were abandoned at a public park. They had no idea how to fend for themselves and sadly, his female companion was rescued too late and died of starvation. Cornelius began walking around in circles with swollen nostrils clearly mourning his loss until a lovely woman named Cornelia rescued him and contacted us. Cornelius has now completed his medications for a suspected lung infection and is enjoying life at our shelter. Much as we love him, we now need to find him a permanent home where he will be equally appreciated.

If you would like to offer a home for Cornelius that’s safe from predators and poachers, we would love to hear from you. Please e-mail us at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

Bereavement donation put to immediate use

When Robyn’s parents passed away, she kindly made a $500 donation to Animal Re-homing on their behalf. Like her, they were great animal lovers and she knew they would be delighted to have helped out rescued animals.

Yesterday we used $378 of the money to cover the vet treatments for one of our permanent shelter cats, named Chance (pictured below). He needed a comprehensive check, worm & flea treatment, urine & blood samples taken, x-rays, an anaesthetic with fluids, medications and dentistry. The remainder of the donation was spent on special food for the hedgehogs we are rehabilitating from severe mange. (Paul and Billy are pictured below). Huge thanks to Robyn and her parents for making this possible!

We have seven other gorgeous cats who need exactly the same procedures as Chance – with some requiring additional dental extractions. Cosmo (pictured having a cuddle) is next in line for the treatments. If you are able to sponsor or part-sponsor another of our rescue animals please visit our donate page or make a donation at https://www.givealittle.co.nz/org/animalrehoming
