Help us find a home for Max

altHelp us find a home for Max the Border Collie before Christmas. Our adorable Max must leave his foster home in less than two weeks so we are desperately seeking a lovely home for him. Please share this post with your friends so we can help Max. Thanks!

Beautiful Border Collie Max, has just turned four years old. When he tore both cruciate ligaments within five months, his distraught caregivers could not afford to pay for the second surgery or maintain him long term. With broken hearts, they asked the vet to euthanize him.

Desperate for a solution before the end of the day, the clinic staff contacted us. With the help of our precious donors and with dozens of volunteers creating and selling beaded bracelets, funds were raised to pay for Max’s discounted operation. Julie and Stephanus generously agreed to the intensive task of fostering him for the first eight weeks of his 12 week recovery.

Max has reached a point in his rehabilitation that we are now seeking applications for his adoption. He will need gentle exercise for the next few weeks and plenty of loving human company to keep him happy and stimulated while he settles into his new surroundings and lifestyle.

altIn less than two weeks, Max must leave his foster home, so we are hoping that someone ideal will quickly come forward for him and will be around home for the Christmas and holiday period. We would prefer that he doesn’t have to experience the wrench of leaving another fosterer – although we will consider a foster-to-adopt trial home.

Max is neutered, micro-chipped, registered and is in excellent health. He is a sensitive soul who is startled by fireworks and other loud sounds – so we are looking for a relatively quiet home for him. He loves to be with the people he trusts, so we are hoping there will be someone at home during the day or that he can go to work with his primary caregiver...or doggy day-care may be an option.

altMax will be a wonderful and devoted companion to his successful applicant. His sweet nature will be appreciated by a family, couple or individual and he also enjoys meeting and greeting other dogs. At this stage he is not allowed boisterous play, so a resident dog would need to be relatively calm or able to be kept separate for a month. If you are interested in the possible adoption of Max, please contact us at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

Note: We are very grateful to Kath at Nose to Tail Dogwash for sponsoring his hydrotherapy sessions to ensure the best possible recovery. Thanks also to Forrest Hill Vet Clinic for discounting their medical fee for Max.

RE: “HUMANELY RAISED” SUPPLIERS

To Whom It May Concern,

As a regular customer of your store, I was concerned to learn that the new Colony Systems for layer hens are in fact Colony Caged Systems. My concern is that you currently stock or will stock this product in the future which supports the ongoing cruelty of caging laying hens unnecessarily. This new cage system is not supported by SAFE or the RNZSPCA and you may be aware that recently the CEO Ric Odom spoke out about this saying that farms using these cages are “a backward step that flies in the face of current trends”.

I ask that you replace all of your egg suppliers who are using cages with a more humane option that uses meaningful third party auditing programs such as AsureQuality that undertakes spot checks to ensure that they are meeting high animal welfare standards.

Currently, caged products do not align with New Zealand values. There is nothing natural or humane about caged farming and it is a conflict with the perceived “100% Pure Green” image.

I urge you to seriously consider my request. As your customer and a consumer I would fully support you should you decide to remove caged produced eggs from your shelves, as would a significant number of your other customers.

Yours faithfully,

We hope this letter finds our website visitors and the animals in their care very happy and looking forward to balmy Summer weather and the upcoming holiday season.

Right now we need help with our animal rescue, rehabilitation and re-homing work. Much has happened this year, including Animal Re-homing being granted registered charity status in April 2014. This enables us to issue official receipts - so you will be able to claim back reimbursement from the IRD for one-third of any donation made.

Our current running costs and needs are huge, so we are appealing to our supporters for help. Outstanding vet bills have reached $5,668.69. It’s heart-breaking to turn away from animals who desperately deserve to be saved - but we need urgent help to continue. We hope you will come forward to assist us.

Max (pictured) is a gorgeous 3-year-old Border Collie who was about to be lethally injected because his caregivers couldn’t afford the $3,000 for his second cruciate ligament surgery. The vet phoned and asked if we could raise the funds for the operation, rehabilitate him and find him a new home. He offered us the surgery at half price. To save Max’s life, we said yes and collected him the same day. He is being kept still and doing well following his surgery and will soon need a loving home. Some wonderful volunteers are making and selling $2 bracelets – but they have not raised nearly enough to pay for the operation. (We also have a cat named Martini waiting for the same surgery).

Bumble is part of a chicken rescue we have been involved in. Approximately 200 hens, roosters and chicks needed to be removed and re-homed to prevent their slaughter. Ten vulnerable birds came home with us. Among them is severely disabled Bumble (pictured) who was also crop bound through dehydration. She is a spirited, friendly and determined little girl who deserves a chance for a better life. We took her to the avian vet and discovered that she most likely needs a leg amputation which will cost $450. She already hops about on one leg, so we expect her to cope well when the historically dislocated leg is removed.

Please scroll down to the bottom for a shortlist of expenses and needs we are trying to prioritise.

All the very best to each of you for the upcoming festive season. May 2015 bring you a very happy year and much more relief to animals in strife. We leave you watching our short rooster documentary. Please click here.

Love and huge appreciation for any assistance you are able to offer. Thank you so much!

This is not urgent or crucial, but for over a decade I have been sitting on a kitchen chair. I am either out in the field rescuing animals or sitting at the computer for 70 hours per week. The poor seating is impacting on my neck and back. Research has led me to the Swopper chair.

Pawtect flea pendants $91 for cats. $97 for dogs
See http://www.pawtect.com/
This is an alternate, gentle flea management method that is active for 2 years. We have trialled two of them and would like to use them for fragile cats & dogs & permanent shelter animals - rather than chemical treatments.
